OK folks, there is lots going on in my house, but I am not allowed to blog about it, sorry. I have got a job to apply for, which I will be doing this w/e. Its with the national trust and is along the lines of what I have been doing with the Wildlife Trust. In work this week the new tractor arrived. I am not sure I am allowed to drive it but I got to sit in it look at its shiny buttons. It has about 16 forward gears and 12 backwards ones. It has a CD player and it is red (a Case rather than a Massey Ferguson).

Education
Further/higher education need to be separated. Bring back polytechnics and make sure there are a wide range of technical/manual skilled courses available. We don't need to have every man and his dog having an academic degree.
GCSEs
When pupils enter into year 10, most teachers should have some sort of rough idea who will get Cs and above and who won't. Those who are predicted to get Cs and above should be allowed to do the full range of subjects (but only up to 10 of them). Those who won't do so well should spend years 10 and 11 just doing 5 key subjects, Maths and English, Science and maybe a Modern Language. Then if they pass these subjects (get Cs or above) for years 12 and 13 they can do 5 further GCSEs, so when they leave school at 18 (because we know the government is making school till 18 compulsory) they should have a wide range of subjects at GSCE to a good standard. The second lot of GCSEs they take could include things like plumbing, building (CDT I think it used to be called), typing and other manual skills.

As for Manifesto 3 ... Hmm good Idea on the GSCE thing, alas around here they are still struggling on the 5 GCSEs regardless of grade in the state schools. Join with our YG who has lots of GCSE (she must have about 14 of them, some done early) but only a handful it would seem above a C; I think she has 5 ... but not much more. But hey we should be glad she made it all the way through secondary school (we have some of the worst truancy levels at state secondaries, my view of private schools changed when I moved back here and wasn't part of the student community!)
Hmm poly/uni thing... as a Graduate of a former Poly that still does what it did generally from those days (alas Physics has been lost to Sports Science) I think that bit is mainly in the name, but maybe more publicity be given to 'vocational degrees', my parents did them at Uni of London places for their respective jobs, I did one for my job at a former poly ... which had turned Uni when I went there.
